Deep Dive into Thai Exports: Adapting Logistics and Business Strategies in a Changing Global Trade Landscape

With Mr. Kongrit Chantrik

(Executive Director, Thai National Shippers' Council (TNSC))

Exporting goods from Thailand today faces a completely new set of challenges—from global economic volatility and stricter international trade regulations to unpredictable logistics costs. Relying solely on high-quality manufacturing is no longer enough; success now demands proactive strategies, supply chain management, and comprehensive hidden-cost reduction.

1. What is TNSC? Driving and Representing Thai Exporters

Established under the Thai Shippers' Council Act B.E. 2537 (1994), the Thai Shippers' Council (TNSC) has been serving the industry for over 32 years. It currently represents around 2,200 member companies, spanning major exporters, manufacturers, and SMEs.

Core Responsibilities of TNSC:

  • Bargaining Power & Negotiation: Acts as a unified voice to negotiate and counterbalance power with international shipping lines and logistics service providers.
  • Government Advocacy: Bridges the gap between exporters and the public sector, addressing structural issues such as traffic congestion around Laem Chabang Port.
  • Risk Monitoring & Early Warning: Tracks global trade dynamics, geopolitical conflicts, and emerging trade barriers daily to give exporters a head start in mitigation.

2. Hard Lessons from the Past: Modern Cost Management

Looking back at the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis (Tom Yum Kung Crisis), one of the biggest lessons learned was "the hidden cost of holding inventory."

  • Traditional View: Storing large amounts of inventory was seen as an asset and a safety cushion.
  • Current Reality: Excessive inventory is tied-up capital that carries high risks, especially during exchange rate fluctuations.
  • The Shift: Exporters must look beyond basic freight rates and manage the Total Cost of Logistics—covering procurement, warehousing, freight, and holding time.

3. Key Challenges Facing Thai Exporters Today

  1. Exchange Rate Volatility: Directly impacts exporters' revenue and profit margins; TNSC assists by promoting risk hedging tools.
  2. Evolving Global Trade Rules: Environmental standards (such as carbon footprint regulations) and stricter supply chain compliance from trading partners.
  3. Infrastructure Bottlenecks: Port congestion, transport traffic delays, and customs process frictions.

4. Opportunity for Solutions: TILOG-LOGISTIX

To help Thai entrepreneurs navigate these changes, TNSC has partnered with the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), the Ministry of Commerce, and RX BITEC to organize TILOG-LOGISTIX—ASEAN's premier logistics technology and services exhibition.

What to Expect at the Event:

  • Comprehensive Tech & Solutions: Ranging from smart warehouse automation and material handling to packaging solutions and international freight services.
  • World-Class Seminars: Insights from global industry experts at events such as the World Transport and Logistics Forum and the International Trade Logistics Symposium.
  • Business Networking: Connect with industry leaders, partners, and representatives from over 24 supporting trade associations and federations.
